.Update...

Upon receiving further damage reports near Smith Lake for the
Arley/Helicon fd tornado, survey crews revisited the area and
added more damage to the previous assessment. This new damage
increases the rating to an EF-2 with estimated peak winds of
130-135 mph, increases the path length to 7.L miles, and the path
width to 1000 yards.

.Overview...

A slow moving, but robust weather system produced several
incidents of severe weather across northwestern portions of
central Alabama late Tuesday and overnight... north of
Interstate 20/59 and west of Interstate 65. Nine tornado
tracks have been confirmed across the far northwestern counties
of Marion, Winston,Pickens, Lamar, Fayette, and Walker counties.
An additional tornado occurred in the pre-dawn hours in Marengo
and Hale County, and another in Lee and Chambers County just
after noon.

Survey summary: the tornado touched down about 5 miles northeast
of Ethelsville on County Road 35. A few trees were snapped off
around this location but the initial damage was rather minor. The
tornado continued northeast and crossed antiach Church Road where
it continued snapping off and uprooting trees. The tornado then
approached County Road 34 where the tornado was at its maximum
intensity. Numerous trees were snapped off and were uprooted on
both sides of the tornado path. Several outbuildings were either
damaged or destroyed. The tornado continued northeast where it
crossed shawtone Road, Woodard Road, and Miller Road. The tornado
lifted just before it crossed County Road 27. The tornado was 5.3
miles long and was 600 yards wide at its widest point. The tornado
was rated an EF-1 with winds around 95 mph. An additional note,
there were sporadic trees blown down within one mile on the
southern side path. This damage was due to strong inflow winds
into the storm.

The tornado touched down just south of Cedarcrest ln in northeastern
Marengo County near the communities of Siddonsville and Faunsdale.
The tornado traveled northeast crossing Cedarcrest farms where it
damaged several trees, barns and outbuildings. The tornado then
crossed CR 54 where it reached its maximum strength and width
uprooting and snapping several hard and softwood trees. The tornado
continued northeast crossing Hwy 80 where it entered Hale County.
Several more trees sustained damage along County roads 12, 10, and
highways 25 and 61. The tornado lifted near Hwy 61 just west of
Perry County.

This tornado formed along the squall line on Wednesday afternoon in
extreme northwestern Lee County. The first damage surveyed was
along Lee Rd 88 just southwest of Hwy 280 near Waverly where the
tornado traveled northeast crossing Lee Rd 453 causing minor
structure damage and several trees were either snapped or uprooted.
The tornado then crossed Hwy 280 and went into Chambers County along
CR 21 where it was at its widest and most destructive point.
Numerous hard and softwood trees were uprooted and snapped. The
tornado lifted just north of CR 21.

tornadoes into the following categories.

EF0... weak... ... 65 to 85 mph
EF1... weak... ... 86 to 110 mph
EF2... strong... .111 to 135 mph
EF3... strong... .136 to 165 mph
EF4... violent... 166 to 200 mph
EF5... violent... >200 mph
