Beach Hazard Statement

... Beach hazards statement in effect from Saturday morning
through Monday evening...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a
beach hazards statement outlook for elevated surf and rip
currents... which is in effect from late Saturday morning through
Monday evening.

* Hazards... surf building to 3 to 5 feet with locally larger sets

* Timing... surf will begin to build on Saturday... peaking around 3
to 5 feet with locally larger sets possible Sunday and Monday.

* Location... the largest surf is expected on south to southwest
facing beaches.

* Potential impacts... there will be the potential for strong and
frequent rip currents... strong longshore currents... and sneaker
waves which are much larger waves that occur without warning.
Sneaker waves can wash you off piers or rocks near the Waters

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats to beach and
surf zone safety are expected or occurring. Caution should be
used when in or near the water. Stay near occupied lifeguard
towers and never swim alone. If caught in a rip current... swim
parallel to the shore.

... Warmest August on record at Santa Barbara and Santa Maria

August 2015 was the warmest August on record at both
Santa Barbara Airport and at Santa Maria Airport.

At Santa Barbara Airport... the average mean temperature for the
month of August 2015 was 71.1 degrees. That edged out the mean
temperature of 71.0 degrees recorded in August 1971... which
had previously been the warmest August. Records for Santa Barbara
Airport date back to 1940.

At Santa Maria Airport... the average mean temperature for the month
of August 2015 was 69.2 degrees... making it the warmest August on
record. That distinction had previously belonged to August 1983
which had an average temperature of 68.8 degrees. Records for Santa
Maria Airport date back to 1906.

With an average monthly temperature of 70.9 degrees at San Luis
Obispo Airport... it was also the warmest August on record
there... breaking the previous record of 70.1 degrees in 2009.
However... records for San Luis Obispo Airport only date back
to 1998.
