Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 4:38 PM MDT on July 29, 2014

Expires 2:00 AM EDT on July 30, 2014

The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
southern Mineral County in south central Colorado... west central
Rio Grande County in south central Colorado... including the West
Fork burn scar complex.

* Until 730 PM MDT

* at 437 PM MDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and Small Stream flooding in
the advisory area.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include... the West
Fork burn scar complex... South Fork... Wolf Creek Pass and Wagon
Wheel Gap.

This includes the following streams and drainages... Sierra creek...
San Juan River... Rainbow creek... Hope Creek... Copper Creek... Blue
Creek... West Fork San Juan River... Alder Creek... Pierce Creek...
Beaver Creek... pass creek... leopard creek... Fall Creek... Clear
Creek... Lake creek... west Trout Creek... Cimarron creek... Kelly
Creek... Park Creek... burro creek... South Fork Rio Grande... Fisher
Creek... Lime Creek... Deep Creek... Ivy Creek... Kitty Creek... Lane
creek... soda creek... grande, Rio and Goose Creek.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Just a small amount of rainfall on a burn scar can lead to flash
flooding. Water that is normally absorbed by the soils and
vegetation... runs off almost instantly. This causes creeks and
drainage areas to flood at a much faster rate than normal. In
addition... the soils in a burn scar become unstable when it rains...
sometimes resulting in debris and Falling Rock. Roads can be washed
out by the force of the rushing water and debris.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office.
