       ... August 2014 climate summary for Jacksonville...

    ... near normal temperatures and below normal rainfall...

The month of August was characterized by summerlike conditions
consisting of humid... warm weather with afternoon thunderstorms for
a majority of the month. There was however an unusual period of
dry... clear weather which saw extreme Max temperatures on the 21st
through 23rd. This brief period saw above normal temperatures in the
upper 90s and even low 100s that permitted heat advisories across
the entire area. This short heat wave was followed by much below
normal low temperatures in the low to mid 60s on the 27th through
29th.

Two tropical cyclones were named this month... the first was Bertha
which reached category one hurricane status with minor impacts as it
curved and moved offshore up the Atlantic coast. The second was
Cristobal which also achieved category one wind speeds and had
minimal impacts... never making landfall in the US as it moved up the
Atlantic Seaboard.

At Jacksonville International Airport...

Temperatures...
the average temperature for August was 82.2 degrees... which is 0.4
degrees above normal. The average daily high was 91.8 degrees. The
average daily low was 72.5 degrees. The highest temperature for the
month was 99 degrees on the 22nd. The lowest temperature was 64
degrees on the 28th. A record daily high was reached on August 23rd
with 98 degrees that the previous record set in 1966. A record
daily low was set on the 28th with 64 degrees... breaking the
previous record of 65 set in 1984. There were 23 days with a maximum
temperature of 90 degrees or above.

Rainfall...
August rainfall totaled 3.03 inches... 3.77 inches below normal. There
were 11 days of measurable rainfall. The greatest 24 hour total was
1.29 inches on the 2nd to 3rd.

Wind...
the average wind speed for July was 6.3 miles per hour. The peak
wind gust for the month was 48 miles per hour from the south
southeast on the 19th.

For energy consumption purposes...
there were 0 heating degree days... which is normal. There were 536
cooling degree days... which is 15 above normal.

Outlook...
the outlook for September calls for heightened chances... above 50
percent... of seeing above normal temperatures and equal chances of
above... normal... or below normal rainfall. The normal monthly
average temperature for September is 78.2 degrees. The normal daily
high is 86.9 degrees and the normal daily low is 69.5 degrees.
