Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 11:32 AM EDT on April 17, 2014

Expires 5:30 PM EDT on April 17, 2014

The National Weather Service in Caribou Maine has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
north Central Aroostook County in northern Maine...

* until 530 PM EDT Thursday

* at 1125 am EDT an NWS employee reported water levels from the St.
John river beginning to flood Route 161 in St. Francis due to an
ice jam on the St. John estimated to be between 3 and 4 miles long.

* The most significant impacts are expected to be around St. Francis
where the ice jam is currently centered. However persons both up and
downstream need to remain vigilant as conditions can change very
quickly.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Water levels can rise and fall quickly in the vicinity of ice jams.
Those with interests along rivers and stream should be alert for
rapidly fluctuating water levels in the vicinity of ice jams.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Areal Flood Watch

Statement as of 3:42 AM EDT on April 17, 2014

Expires 3:00 PM EDT on April 17, 2014

... Flood Watch remains in effect until 3 PM EDT this afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central Maine... north central Maine...
northern Maine... southeast Maine and west central Maine...
including the following areas... in east central Maine...
central Penobscot... northern Penobscot and southern Penobscot.
In north central Maine... central Piscataquis... northern
Piscataquis and southern Piscataquis. In northern Maine...
northeast Aroostook... Northwest Aroostook and southeast
Aroostook. In southeast Maine... central Washington... coastal
Hancock... coastal Washington... interior Hancock and northern
Washington. In west central Maine... northern Somerset.

* Until 3 PM EDT this afternoon

* much colder and drier air has helped slow runoff and improve
conditions across the region. Many roads however remain closed
due to flooding.

* Ice continues to move on the Saint John river with much of river
now showing open water. There is still solid ice south of Van
Buren to Hamlin with some open water. At this time, river levels
continue to rise slowly. The Aroostook and Piscataquis rivers
are open with some ice flowing through and river levels running
high but now are receding.

* The Mattawamkeag and Penobscot rivers are still rising but
showing signs of slowing down due to the colder temperatures.

* The threat of flooding continues and flooding can rapidly
develop in the vicinity of ice jams. Those with interests along
rivers and streams should remain alert for ice jams and possible
flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
