Air Quality Alert

Statement as of 9:15 AM MDT on August 20, 2017

Expires 11:00 AM EDT on August 21, 2017

... Air quality alert in effect until 900am MDT Monday...

The Montana department of environmental quality has issued an air
quality alert for Granite, Missoula, and Ravalli counties in effect
until further notice due to fire activity in west-central Montana.
Air quality is expected to deteriorate this morning before improving
briefly this afternoon. Smoke from the Lolo Peak fire is causing poor
air quality in the northern Bitterroot valley and Missoula. Smoke
from the Rice Ridge fire is causing hazardous air quality in Seeley
Lake between midnight and noon. The Missoula city-County health
department recommends residents spend as little night time as
possible in Seeley Lake due to the dangerous overnight pollution
levels. This alert will be updated again at 900am 8/21/2017.

An air quality alert means that particulates have been trending
upwards and that an exceedence of the 24 hour National ambient air
quality Standard (naaqs) has occurred or may occur in the near
future.

As of 900am, particulate levels in Seeley Lake are hazardous

As of 900am, particulate levels in Florence are very unhealthy

As of 900am, particulate levels in Philipsburg are unhealthy

As of 900am, particulate levels in Hamilton are unhealthy for
sensitive groups

As of 900am, particulate levels in Missoula are moderate, but
increasing

When air quality is hazardous... state and local health officials
recommend that everyone should avoid any outdoor exertion; people
with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should
remain indoors.

When air quality is very unhealthy... state and local health
officials recommend that people with respiratory or heart disease,
the elderly, and children should avoid any outdoor activity; everyone
else should avoid prolonged exertion.

When air quality is unhealthy... state and local health officials
recommend that people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly,
and children should avoid prolonged exertion; everyone else should
limit prolonged exertion.

When air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups... state and local
health officials recommend that people with respiratory or heart
disease, the elderly and children should limit prolonged exertion.

When air quality is moderate... state and local health officials
recommend that unusually sensitive people should consider reducing
prolonged or heavy exertion.
