... November 2017 and autumn seasonal weather summary for north
central and southwest Montana...

After a cold period early in the month, November delivered mostly
near to above normal temperatures. Below zero temperatures were seen
across much of the area early in the month, temperatures averaged 35
to 40 degrees below normal on the 4th and 5th, rebounding to 25 to
30 degrees above normal from the 22nd-26th. Precipitation was mostly
concentrated early in the month, during the coldest period. Heavy
snow blanketed much of north central Montana early in the
month. Windy conditions of the fall also continued through November.

### Temperature

Overall... temperatures averaged above normal over southern portions
and below normal in north central Montana. Temperature departures
from average ranged from 2.5f below normal at Turner to 5.3f above
normal at West Yellowstone. The area's highest temperature was 73f
at Valentine on the 23rd. The lowest temperature was -16 at Rudyard
19s on the 7th. Temperature averages ranged from 37.4f at Holter dam
to 21.0f at porphory peak. As a composite, the area average
temperature was near normal.

For the fall season /September through November/, this was the
coolest such period since 2002 at Bozeman and Dillon. It was the
coolest since 2006 at Cut Bank and Havre.

### Precipitation
precipitation amounts were above normal except over eastern portions
of the area. Bozeman and West Yellowstone had their 5th wettest
November of record. The wettest spot was Black Bear snotel with
12.20", while east Glacier reported 4.96". This was the wettest
November since 1968 at Bozeman, and since 1988 at West Yellowstone.

Persistent precipitation for the fall produced the 4th wettest of
record at West Yellowstone. It was the wettest fall period since
1985 at Helena.

The above normal precipitation most areas also produced above normal
snowfall totals for November at most locations. Cut Bank recorded
their 5th highest amount, and most in November since 2012. With
24.9" at Bozeman msu, this was their 7th highest monthly amount for
November.

### Wind
in general, winds were above normal in November. At Airport
locations, Cut Bank had the strongest monthly average at 15.6 mph.
The highest average at higher elevations was 24.0 mph at Deep Creek
RAWS, in Glacier County. The highest November gust was 95 mph at
Logan Pass on the 23rd. A spot near Fort Benton recorded a gust to
82 mph on the 20th.
This was the windiest November in several years at most locations.
Bozeman and Lewistown saw their windiest November since 2006. At
Havre it was the windiest since 2007 and since 2009 at Great Falls.
Great Falls had 14 days with gusts of 40 mph or higher. The average
is seven. This was the most number of days with gusts of 40 mph or
higher since November 1990.

For the fall period, October and November had stronger than normal
wind speeds. This was the windiest fall since 1990 at Cut Bank and
since 1992 at Great Falls. Lewistown had their windiest fall since
2003.
For October and November, winds gusted over 40 mph on 26 days at
Great Falls. This was the most since 32 days during this period in
1990. The average is 13 days.
