... August 2015 and June-August seasonal weather summary for north
central and southwest Montana...

In August, temperatures averaged slightly below normal in the Havre
area and above normal nmost other areas. Departures were 0.1 degree
below average at Havre and 2.3f above normal at Great Falls.
Temperatures were above normal for the first 4 days of August, with
a period of below normal for the next 4 days. The warmest period of
the month was from the 9th-14th, with temperaures as much as 15-20
degrees above normal. Loma and Fort Benton hit 102f on the 14th. A
cooler than normal period stretched from the 15th-23rd. Some areas
saw their first frost on the 21st and 23rd. Newlan creek fell to 19f
on the morning of the 23rd. This set an area record for the coldest
temperature for the date. From the 24th to the end of the month,
above average tempeartures prevailed. Although the month's average
temperatures were close to normal, Lewistown did have their warmest
augst since 2003.

For the Summer season (june-august), this was the warmest Summer at
many locations since 2006 or 2007. The water year (oct-aug) has been
warm as well. At Dillon, this is the warmest water-year of record,
Helena is having their second warmest and Lewistown is having their
4th warmest.

For precipitation, August produced a mixed bag of conditions. The
wettest areas was over the southwest and central mountains. Most
areas had below normal precipitation. Most areas had their driest
August since 2006 or 2008. The highest area monthly precipitation at
lower elevations was 1.57-inches near Red Rock, while Crystal Lake
picked up 3.30-inches.

For the Summer season, as a regionwide composite, this was the
driest such period since 2007. At Great Falls, it was the 8th driest
Summer of record.

Wind speeds were above average at several locations. Of Airport
locations, Cut Bank had the strongest monthly average of 10.3 mph,
which was 0.5 mph above the long-term average. Dillon had their
windiest August since 1991, while at Great Falls, it was the
windiest August since 2008. The windiest location at lower
elevations was Sweet Grass, with an average of 12.1 mph. Higher
elevations (deep creek) reported an average speed of 13.9 mph.
Thunderstorms did produce significant gusts during the month. On the
14th, a gust to 71 mph was reported near Denton. Gusts reached 68
mph from a thunderstorm at Havre on the 29th. Strong west winds
pushed into the northern rockies on the 30th and 31st. A gust of 72
mph was reported at Babb on the 30th while Deep Creek reported a
gust of 82 mph on the 31st.

For the Summer period, all areas had wind averages lighter than
normal.
