Flash Flood Warning, Areal Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
Smyth County in southwestern Virginia...
Tazewell County in southwestern Virginia...
southwestern Bland County in southwestern Virginia...
western Wythe County in southwestern Virginia...

* until 215 am EDT

* at 820 PM EDT, emergency management officials reported flooding
in many areas across Smyth and western Tazewell counties.
Numerous roads are currently being closed across Smyth County
as a result of excessive rainfall and flooding. Flooding of some
roads and structures has also been reported in western Tazewell
County. The public has also reported flooding in western Bland
County.

Rainfall of 3-4 inches has been common across this area during the
past two days... and additional rainfall of 1-3 inches is likely
during the next 24-36 hours.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Bland...
Marion...
Richlands...
Tazewell...
and Saltville.

Flooding has been reported on the Clinch River in Tazewell, Wolf Creek
near Rocky Gap, Walker Creek in Smyth County, including Hungry Mother
State Park, and the the middle and North Fork of the Holston River in Smyth
County, as well as related tributaries, creeks, and streams.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately.
Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate
precautions to protect life and property.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
Smyth County in southwestern Virginia...
Tazewell County in southwestern Virginia...
Bland County in southwestern Virginia...
western Wythe County in southwestern Virginia...

* until 630 PM EDT Monday

* at 637 PM EDT, local law enforcement officials reported flooding
in Richlands in western Tazewell County. The public has reported
flooding along the Clinch River in western Tazewell County. Some
homes have been threatened and at least One Road is under water in
the same general area. Indications are that the Clinch River is
continuing to rise and will rise above flood stage this evening,
and potentially as high as 15 feet by Monday morning. This level
on the Clinch River at Richlands would constitute moderate
flooding and would threaten more roads and property in the area,
potentially with a significant impact. Precautions in this region
should be taken now to protect lives and property.

Three to four inches of rain has fallen throughout this region
during the last two days. An additional 1.5 to 3 inches of rain is
likely in this area during the next 24-36 hours.

Wytheville...
Bland...
Marion...
Richlands...
and Bluefield.

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of North Carolina, Virginia, and southeast West
Virginia, including the following areas, in North Carolina,
Alleghany NC, Ashe, Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry,
Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin. In Virginia, Appomattox, Bedford,
Bland, Botetourt, Campbell, Carroll, Charlotte, Craig, Floyd,
Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Halifax, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick,
Pittsylvania, Pulaski, Roanoke, Smyth, Tazewell, and Wythe. In
southeast West Virginia, Mercer.

* Through Monday evening

* moderate to heavy rain will take place, with 1.5 to 3 inches
likely today through Monday night. Locally higher amounts
likely near the Blue Ridge, south of Roanoke.

* The duration and widespread nature of the heavy rainfall is
expected to result in rises and potential flooding on area
streams, while flooding may also be possible along some main
Stem rivers on Monday or Tuesday. Additionally, heavier short
term rainfall rates associated with bands of heavy rain
showers could result in localized flash flooding along small
streams and in urban areas. Saturated ground may also result
in downed trees and rock or mud slides.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
